TRAFFIC congestion in Tarneit is set to take a hit with the announcement that a $2.6 million contract to build a roundabout at a busy intersection has been awarded.
Member for the Western Metropolitan Region, Andrew Elsbury, said work would start soon on the Dohertys and Derrimut Rd intersection with Universal Concrete Contractors chosen as the builders.
Mr Elsbury said the intersection’s history of crashes and near-misses made the roundabout an important project.
“In the five year period ending 30 June 2013, there were 10 casualty crashes recorded at the intersection including four crashes resulting in serious injuries and six crashes resulting in other injuries,” Mr Elsbury said.
“To make this intersection safer and improve traffic flow, VicRoads will be undertaking a range of important safety improvements, including realigning the road, installing a roundabout and sealing the shoulders.”
Mr Elsbury said the intersection’s importance to Victoria’s traffic network was also a consideration.
“The intersection of Dohertys and Derrimut Road is the east-west connection between the Melton and Laverton North industrial areas,” he said.
“This connection is becoming increasingly vital for commuters, with a current average of 20,000 crossing it every day.
“During the evening peak period, there can be long queues on the eastern approach, extending over 200 metres from Derrimut Road, causing delays.”
It is expected that the works will be completed later this year.
