AN INTERSECTION that has long been the bane of existence for Wyndham drivers has been given urgent status with Wyndham Council calling on the State Government to fix the “fatality waiting to happen”.
Cr Kim McAliney raised a notice of motion at last week’s council meeting which will see the council write to the Minister for Transport to request priority funding to urgently reconstruct the intersection at Forsyth and Old Geelong roads in Hoppers Crossing.
The council will also seek an urgent meeting with the Minister and the developer of the nearby Williams Landing Estate, Cedar Woods.
Cr McAliney told Star that action on the intersection was well overdue.
“I cringe every time there is an accident in Wyndham because I’m waiting for another fatality at this intersection,” Cr McAliney said.
“I have been lobbying for this road to be fixed since 2007 and it’s been on the priority list for a long time.
“It’s time for it to move off the priority list and into some action.”
Wyndham has one of the highest fatality rates across Victoria this year after the latest death brought the toll to 11. According to the latest statistics 56,000 vehicles use the intersection every day, up from 43,000 in 2007.
Cr McAliney said residents were becoming fed up at having to put their lives at risk every time they use the intersection.
“We’re constantly having residents complain to us about it. This is a VicRoads responsibility and they need to take some action now,” she said.
“All of the emergency services bring it up all the time and everyone is worried that this could be fatality number 12.”
