ILLEGAL dumping of rubbish is in the sights of Wyndham Council with the launch of a new campaign against the “huge problem”.
The council is calling on residents to report rubbish dumpers which they say are costing Wyndham more than $1 million every year.
Wyndham Mayor Kim McAliney said residents needed to take a stance against illegal dumping of rubbish.
“I’m sick of seeing people dumping rubbish,” Cr McAliney said.
“It’s costing ratepayers more than $1 million every year and it’s unsightly.”
According to the council’s website, the Dumping is Damaging campaign is targeting the northern suburbs of Wyndham, where illegal dumping is more common.
The aims of the campaign are to educate residents on how they can get rid of waste safely and legally and also to inform people about how to make a litter report if they witness someone dumping waste illegally.
Late last month a Hoppers Crossing man had to pay close to $1000 in fines and other costs after he was caught dumping domestic scraps and debris from his car.
“Council will prosecute offenders and there is nothing worse than being named and shamed publicly,” Cr McAliney said.
“Basically we have to take more pride in our city, that’s the most important thing.”
