AFTER five years of sitting stagnant, one of Werribee’s best known pieces of public art is finally living up to its purpose again.
The untitled fountain in Watton St, often referred to by residents as “the upside down tree”, has had its water turned back on.
The fountain, which was installed in 2000, was turned off 5 years ago during water restrictions.
Wyndham Mayor Cr Kim McAliney said turning on the fountain was symbolic of the current regeneration of the Werribee City Centre.
“There’s so much going on in the Werribee City Centre right now, from the construction of the Wedge Street Bridge to the opening of the Piazza,” Cr McAliney said.
“Switching on this fountain will further improve the amenity of Watton St and will add to what is already a very vibrant shopping strip.”
Cr McAliney said improvements had been made to the original design, making it more environmentally friendly.
“Improvements mean the water in the fountain now recirculates and is much more water efficient,” she said.
“This fountain is part of Wyndham’s extensive public art collection, which includes well known works like the Seeds of Change sculpture on the Werribee turn off from the Princes Highway, to temporary, moveable art like our Pop Ups, inflatable artworks.”
The untitled fountain is on the corner of Watton and Wedge streets in Werribee.
