A WYNDHAM volunteer with a passion for keeping people safe and improving the West’s infrastructure has been recognised for his dedicated service to the community.
Chairman of the RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council, Jim Giddings, was recognised last week for 20 years of service to the advocacy group.
Mr Giddings is also the Chairman of the Wyndham Transport Advisory Committee where he has been a member for 16 years, and a former councillor with the City of Werribee.
In his time advocating for improved roads and transport networks Mr Giddings has been a part of introducing new hoon legislation, 50 kilometre speed limits in residential streets and the banning of trucks from right hand lanes along the Princes Freeway, just to mention a few.
Mr Giddings told Star the fact that he could see his impact making a difference kept him motivated.
“You can see that we are achieving and getting results. You only have to look at the Fit 2 Drive program,” Mr Giddings said.
“It’s now in every second high school in the West, and one of my goals is to see it in every single secondary school.”
RoadSafe Westgate serves four municipalities, Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Melton and Wyndham.
Mr Giddings said he was proud of his award and residents could expect to see him talking about road safety for some time.
“I think I’ve got a number of good years in me yet,” he said.
“I’m very proud to be part of RoadSafe Westgate because we are certainly one of the most progressive road safety councils in Victoria.”
