WYNDHAM farmers are being encouraged to put their hands up and help determine the future of water usage in the area.
Southern Rural Water’s manager of water supply, Edward Smith, said there were six positions available on the company’s customer committee.
“We are really keen to have our customers actively involved. They rely on us for irrigation water for farming and other businesses, and we rely on them to help us understand their businesses and what our customers are thinking,” Mr Smith said.
Chairman of the Werribee Bacchus Marsh Customer Consultative Committee (WBMCCC), Tom Elevato, said he considers it important that customers have an input into SRW’s decision making process.
“The committee gives farmers in both irrigation districts a chance to put their point across and to have their opinions heard,” Mr Elevato said.
“Whilst a lot of what Southern Rural Water does is legislated, the WBMCCC has the opportunity to influence important decisions on the future of the irrigation districts, the levels of service and the impacts on prices, to ensure the best possible outcome for farmers.”
The committee meets every second month, in either Werribee or Bacchus Marsh. SRW provides support and training, and committee members are also paid sitting fees and other allowances. Members are appointed for four years.
