WERRIBEE’S struggles in the Women’s Division Two Big V Basketball season have continued following a 27-point loss at the hands of Blackburn. The Devils were in trouble from the first tip off as the Vikings jumped out to a six-point lead early in the contest. There was no coming back for Werribee with the players struggling to make the most of their chances. They could only manage a shooting percentage of 18.6 across the four quarters from the field. With the Devils unable to mount any scoreboard pressure, the Vikings were free to do as they pleased and secured the 58-31 win. Briana Pastore was the leading scorer for Werribee with eight points while Tarhnie Brown added five. Rebecca Christy worked hard around the ring to win 10 rebounds. The Devils remain winless after 13 rounds and on the bottom of the Division Two ladder. They will look to secure their first win this week against third placed Mornington on Saturday night.
A FIVE goal last quarter wasn’t enough to save the Werribee Districts from defeat against Beaumaris AFC on Saturday in the Victorian Amateur Football Association’s Premier B Division. The Districts fell behind early in the contest as Beaumaris made the most of its chances in front of goal to open up an eight point lead at the first break. The news only got worse for Werribee who conceded a further five goals in the second term and three in the third which saw the margin increased to 37 points at the final break. Whatever was said amongst the playing group during the break worked wonders though as Werribee produced its best football of the match in a five goal to two final quarter. But the damage had been done earlier in the day and the margin was only cut to 18 points as Beaumaris celebrated the win 16.10 (106) to 14.4 (88). Despite the loss Chris Molivas was outstanding for Werribee, booting seven goals.
MODRA Homes has teamed up with VFL club Werribee. The building company’s director John Lamos recently announced the sponsorship deal with the Tigers, citing the similarities between both organisations going into battle for the community. “What we’re doing strongly echoes a team going onto the football field, round after round. We’ve got our team, it’s a strong team, we’ve got our game plan, now we have the hard work to do. It’s a logical step to make considering our unfailing commitment to our customers and the community at large,” Mr Lamos said. Werribee CEO Mark Penaluna said: “The Werribee Football Club are delighted that Modra Homes have become a corporate sponsor for 2012 and hopefully this will be the beginning of a long lasting partnership.”
