A WYNDHAM Council candidate has called for more bus shelters to be built in rapidly growing areas of the municipality.
Mohammed Isah, who is running in the Truganina ward, said bus shelters were a basic infrastructure requirement.
“I am campaigning on getting back to basics and nothing is more basic than providing shelter to the commuters in Point Cook and Truganina,” Mr Isah said.
“I will be writing to every Wyndham councillor and asking them to urgently debate this issue at council. This isn’t a campaign issue, it is an issue of providing the basics to our community.
“I would rather lose this as a campaign issue and have this issue fixed quickly than see local commuters suffer months more stuck in the rain”.
The 23-year-old, who unsuccessfully ran for council in 2008, said residents had raised the issue with him on several occasions.
“Every time it rains you can drive down Sneydes Rd, Sayers Rd, or Boardwalk Blvd and see scores of commuters getting soaked to the bone. Commuters, mums, dads and children shouldn’t be forced to stand in the rain to get where they are going,” he said.
“Identifying where shelters are needed is a council responsibility and action needs to be taken now.
“This was an issue raised by the community repeatedly in my 2008 campaign and the situation has not improved”.
