WYNDHAM has farewelled a former Mayor who has been remembered as a tireless worker and true gentleman.
David McLaren was Mayor of Wyndham in 1998 and was a vital player in the toxic dump scandal, working to stop the State Government from building it in Wyndham.
Former colleague and five-time Mayor Shane Bourke told Star Mr McLaren would be remembered fondly by everyone in the area.
“He was an excellent councillor who worked tirelessly for this community,” Cr Bourke said.
“He had great wisdom, he was very generous and realistic. He would not hold back and would say exactly what he thought.”
Cr Bourke, who was the first Mayor of Wyndham in 1997 said he fondly remembered working with Mr McLaren.
“That was an extremely busy time because we had just come back from having administrators and we hit the ground running with the toxic dump,” he said.
“David was the Mayor at the time when it came out that we had won in stopping the toxic dump and he left a great legacy for the Wyndham community.
“His legacy was not just through being on council, he had done a lot in the community before and after that.”
More than 350 people attended Mr McLaren’s funeral last week after he passed away from cancer. He was 56-years-old.
