THE Sanctuary Lakes Sharks are set to join the Western Region Junior Cricket Association for the upcoming season.
The Sharks will be based at Featherbrook Oval in Point Cook and are hoping to field three teams for its inaugural season.
Club coach and secretary Paul Pritchard said he and fellow junior cricket coach Darren Driscoll, who is the club’s president, felt it was time their players had the chance to face a higher level of competitive cricket as they get older.
“We’re going to use our own experience with coaching and with our experience with the Milo In2Cricket program and draw on the kids from our program to actually fill our club for this year,” Pritchard said.
With just one established cricket club and hundreds of kids involved with Auskick and Milo In2Cricket in the Point Cook area, Pritchard said the demand is there for a new junior cricket club.
When asked what challenges he has faced throughout the club’s inception, Pritchard said it was gaining access to the ground.
“It’s only now that the council have provided grounds to the local community,” he said.
“They’re opening up the new Point Cook sports area on Point Cook Road, which has been great.
“There’s three cricket/football grounds there, there’s soccer pitches and there’s tennis as well so it is happening, but it has been very slow. But they’re great in providing the grounds.”
The club is still seeking players, including boys and girls, coaches, scorers and parent helpers.
