IT was a wet and windy start to the cricket season for all turf-based teams in the western suburbs on Saturday.
A 10am start was the only saving grace for a number of Premier Cricket Clubs who were able to get a few overs in before Melbourne’s inclement weather set in mid-afternoon.
Footscray Edgewater travelled to Windy Hill to take on Essendon for its round one clash and was sent into bat after losing the toss.
The Bulldogs were 4/63 when play was officially washed out after 23 overs.
Of the batsmen to get an opportunity in the middle, gun recruit Wes Robinson was dismissed for 13 while opening partner Dean Russ was also out cheaply for six.
First and second drop Greg Sheehan and Travis Dean were dismissed for a duck and two respectively.
Young batting sensation Dylan Kight was in the middle of launching a rescue effort, navigating his way to 23 not out while Ben Green was on four before play was halted.
Footscray will take on Prahran this week in the club’s first home game of the year.
In the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association, the matches between Williamstown and Altona, Melton and Roxburgh Park/ Broadmeadows, Sunshine and Werribee and Yarraville and Moorabbin were all washed out.
Teams will play in one-day matches this weekend.
With the wild weather predicted throughout the week, the Victorian Turf Cricket Association cancelled its matches before the weekend.
