Focus on femininity

By Christine de Kock
SIX artists celebrating femininity will take part in MREAM Studios’ latest exhibition, Flirty Skirty, which will open 21 April in Footscray.
Von Beyer, a Newport artist, will exhibit her collection of paintings, including a number of images of the female form. “We (the artists) are all very different,” she said.
“Flirty Skirty celebrates femininity – there’s some who say that feminism has been overtaken by commercial images of women and through our expressions of femininity we wish to claim feminism back for ourselves and express that through our art; this exhibition is an optimistic approach of what it is to be a woman.”
Renee Friend will exhibit a number of sheer woven hangings that are integrated to form one work. “Tapestry is often considered a very female form of art work, it is traditionally female, but I have used it in a more contemporary way,” Ms Friend said.
Ms Beyer emphasised that some of the artwork does not have an overt feminist message “but it is more about what we are as people”.
Other artists to take part in the exhibition include Anjelie Beyer, a Mildura oil painter and the mother of Von Beyer.
Brooke Earl will exhibit a collage of bottle tops that feature abstract graphics on their surface, Kristy Graham has created a soundscape that will be played during the exhibition and photographer Anne Herderics will also display her work.
Flirty Skirty opens on 21 April at 4pm at MREAM Studios, 39 Moreland St, Footscray and will be open on weekends or by appointment on 9687 2814.
The exhibition closes at the end of April.
