A young life was cut tragically short on Saturday evening when a 22-year-old man lost his life through drowning at Shelly Beach.
The man, believed to be a tourist from Sydney, was swimming with three friends at Port’s unpatrolled Shelly Beach when the group were caught in a rip at about 7pm.
The alarm was raised and emergency services and surf life saving volunteers attended the scene.
Three of the men were brought to safety, however a fourth man did not recover from the incident.
His body was recovered at about 8pm and paramedics were unable to revive him after he was brought to shore.
One of the survivors was taken to Port Macquarie Base Hospital for treatment.
