Port Macquarie’s celebrated Outrigger canoeists are on the lookout for the sport’s next stars.
The successful local outfit is offering sports men and women the opportunity to join them for a month in a bid to find the sport’s “next big thing”.
Lauren Grant, one of the Club’s coaches was introduced to the sport via an article in her local paper which her Grandmother cut out.
Last year, 10 years on, Grant was selected in the Australian Women’s Team.
“Paddling outrigger canoes on the ocean has become a love affair for me, and I’m so proud to have been given the opportunity to represent my country at the World Title in Hawaii last September. I’m sure there are others in the area who, with dedication, could achieve similar things,” she said.
The Club is also developing Juniors.
Boys and girls from 12-18 years, as well as adults, are invited to a special session at 8am this Saturday at the Westport Boat Ramp.
Newcomers will be introduced to the canoes and learn how to paddle, from qualified and accomplished canoeists.
