Friendship back in print

The Independent newspaper has played an integral part in reuniting two old friends.

Recently an article was printed outlining the history of Constable Printing.

It was by chance that the artist mentioned in the story, Alan Lester, was in Port Macquarie for a 30-year reunion of the Palm Court Squash Club and read the piece in the paper.

He then contacted the original owner of Constable Printing, Julie Constable, who employed Alan as the original artist for her business.

The long lost friends caught up for a coffee and a yarn about the good old days back in the 1980s in Port, Julie said.

Alan lived in the region for 30 years and he and his wife Sue have family here, she said.

They now live in Tasmania and visit from time to time.

“Alan had a great laugh about the old days and how he produced

many cartoon character pictures of most of the tradies in the town at the time,” Julie said.

“At one stage, the Settler’s Inn Tavern had its walls lined with pictures of all the brickies, painters, carpentersetc who used this place as a special watering hole.

“Most of the sporting people in the town would remember Alan for his great artwork.”
