Fast track to artistic fame for Brandon

Port Macquarie High School graduate Brandon Biddle’s artistic nous will be on show at Sydney’s largest ARTEXPRESS exhibition for 2011.

His artwork ‘Inner Monster’ (pictured right) will be on show at Sydney Olympic Park from Tuesday, March 1.

The free exhibition of major works submitted by students for the 2010 HSC Visual Arts Examination will run for eight weeks at the unique, heritage-listed Newington Armory.

The seventh annual ARTEXPRESS at the Armory display will explore the theme A Field Guide to Human Life.

The theme for the exhibition was selected by independent curator, John Murphy, who has chosen works by more than 70 students from schools.

The 2011 collection includes various art forms including ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and textiles; and has a strong representation of films and new media.

Brandon said his artwork, ‘Inner Monster’ was “my artistic elective surgery that I undertook to extract the terrors of my past from my being, allowing them the recognition they desire, while preventing their toxicity from infecting my person”.

The theme of A Field Guide to Human Life will explore the relationship between visual art and other human pursuits, a subject that suits Brandon’s artwork nicely. “Illustrating and dealing with core experiences of the human condition, my artwork is very much an extract of ‘A Field Guide to Human Life’,” he said.

“The artwork outlines the building frustration, hurt and confusion we all often experience in our human existence; how it can encompass us to the point that we almost feel suffocated.”

Brandon now has plans to find a career that will allow him to continue making art. One thing he is sure of is that being displayed at the seventh ARTEXPRESS at the Armory is an exciting experience.

“I won’t be able to mentally accept that this has happened until I am standing face to face with my artwork,” Brandon said.
