So many people seem to be saying this. My concern is, who replaces them?
What about our electorate? My concern is that if we don’t have a member of a Party elected, what chance have we of getting anything substantial in the future for our electorate?
An Independent is never truly ‘independent’ within the traditional meaning of the term. Regardless of which party forms government, an Independent merely acts to compromise with that government for concessions in a seat it does not hold. Much more is achieved by electing a member of parliament from a political party that will have a voice at the table of government, a voice that ensures the people of Port Macquarie do not face compromise in their dealings with the State. The allure of retaining or being elected to government gives a Party an incentive to maintain constituent confidence through effective funding and policy. The prospect of being a part of government does not, nor will it ever exist for an Independent MP.
