International Kirtan artist Dave Stringer will be making his fourth and most extensive Australian tour yet from March 2-27.
Stringer’s sound marries the transcendent mysticism of traditional Indian instruments with the exuberant, groove-oriented sensibility of American gospel, and he is regarded as one of the most gifted singers in the genre.
Kirtan (pronounced keer-tahn) is a form of call-and-response singing that originated in India, and is currently experiencing a worldwide renaissance as a participatory live music experience. It involves traditional Indian instruments, such as the harmonium and tablas drums.
“Kirtan is closely associated with the yoga. It is an experience that is not only joyful and freeing but holds the possibility of transcending the mind and finding a place of presence, wellbeing and joyfulness. You don’t have to practise yoga or sing well to be able to enjoy an evening of Kirtan, though. Stringer, who is also an accomplished composer and multi-instrumentalist, has a special ability to bring people together and inspire them to sing,” Dave said.
Dave’s first Port Macquarie concert will be hosted by The Yoga Shala, on Thursday, March 10. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30 pm start.
Tickets are $30 on the door or $25 pre-booked.
