Candidates sink teeth into fluoride issue

Written responses on the government’s water fluoridation policy are now available for candidates in the seats of Port Macquarie and Oxley for the March 26 State election. These are posted on G Warehouse’s website (www.gwarehouse.com.au).
MP for Port Macquarie, Peter Besseling MP, accepts the governments’ propaganda.
Leslie Williams, a registered nurse, acknowledges public opposition to this policy, the behaviour of State government in overriding our local government’s right to resolve this issue, and the genuine health concerns connected with fluoridated water (eg, affecting renal dialysis patients).
The Greens candidate, Drusie Megget, while hoping for direction from her party, acknowledges that water fluoridation may not be the best way of looking after our health, including the teeth. She notes that cities (overseas) are abandoning this policy and asks, “Why?” She sensibly recommends voting on GetUp.
Labor’s candidate, Peter Alley, with a background in computer science and finance, has spent considerable effort in researching the issue for himself. Well done! A principal ‘sticking point’ for Peter appears to be, “Why no complaints about chlorine (ie, a ‘sister’ of fluorine among the halogen group elements)?” The simple answer is that chlorine additives break down to chlorides in water and some alkali chlorides are essential components of our blood — but not so for any fluorides!
It is commendable that some candidates are genuinely engaging with the health implications of the water fluoridation policy. However, most are clearly having difficulty in recognising that citizens, including our dentists and doctors, have been lied to by governments for 60 years.
I therefore urge those in doubt to read Connett et al (2010), “The Case Against Fluoride: How Hazardous Waste Ended Up in our Drinking Water and the Bad Science and Powerful Politics That Keep It There.” [ISBN 9781603582872]
