A much-needed Dementia Day Care Centre was officially opened in Port Macquarie last week in Greenmeadows Drive by the Hon Mark Butler, Minister for Mental Health and Ageing.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Administrator Garry Payne said, with a growing ageing population and increase in the number of people diagnosed with dementia in NSW on the rise, this new centre is a must for the local community.
“A recent report by Access Economics concluded that the State electorate area of Port Macquarie has the second highest number of dementia cases in NSW, with the number of people living in this area with the condition expected to increase by 330 per cent by 2050,” Mr Payne said.
Independent MP for Lyne Rob Oakeshott said the opening follows the completion of the Mid-North Coast Dementia Action Plan towards the end of last year and the official opening last month of the Alzheimer’s Australia NSW office in Port Macquarie at new, larger premises in Lord Street.
“Port Macquarie has the second highest incidence of dementia in NSW and this Centre continues the good work we are doing to meet the challenges of growing demand for community-based support.”
