Regarding Stan Percy’s letter (31st March, 2011), thanks Stan for saying how a lot of us feel about all the letters denying our role in Climate Change, “Not us!” they cry, “it’s nature!”.
All the hundreds of years of digging it all up, trashing the rivers with our poisons and polluting our oceans and air, killing off complete species of plants and animals, “it couldn’t possibly be us,” they cry.
You can bury your head in the sand or anywhere else the sun doesn’t shine but the fact that we’ve made a huge impact on Mother Earth with our lack of respect for nature and the chain of life that depends upon it, to now say that it’s all natural, what’s happening is pretty common among those whose egos are so big that they don’t want to accept this.
We’ve spent generations taking from this Earth, what we want from where we want, when we want and we’ve given little thought to the impact upon Earth. Now that Nature must adapt to the changing conditions that we thrust upon it, we cry that it’s normal.
Considering that if you were to, year after year trash, neglect, poison, pollute and pull down parts of your home, do you honestly think that it would stay the same year after year?
We’ve used money, wealth building and our consumer habits to justify why we shouldn’t be changing anything but the very future of our species will depend upon how we are going to continue to treat this, our home!
Each and every one of us can play a role in thinking about more than just ourselves and look at the big picture. We need to conserve some of the resources that we are currently using too much. Human behaviour needs to change and we need to recognise that what we are doing for jobs and money will be our downfall and the least of our worries when changes come that will threaten our very survival.
Overseas is just the start of what’s to come and our species will go the way we’ve sent other species.
Mother Earth will adapt and change. Do we still want to be a part of life’s journey? Do we want that journey to be a good one? Do we want a beautiful planet that we were given or the hell of a one that we are helping to create? It’s up to us — if we’re the so-called smart ones — to step up to the plate and get on with cleaning it up.
If you feel you owe just a little to Mother Earth then it’s not that hard is it? You can sit down for everything or you can stand up for something.
Well, lots of us are going to make our own contribution despite those who just couldn’t be bothered and would rather whinge about those that do!
