A community campaign has been instigated to reduce the number of speed-related accidents on local streets.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, in partnership with the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA), launched the Slow Down In My Street campaign by placing a speed recording trailer (Variable Message Sign) on Koala Street at O’Brien’s Road to record drivers’ speeds.
The speed recording trailer will be moved to various residential street locations throughout Port Macquarie, Wauchope and the Camden Haven to capture data that may identify speed hotspots.
The trailer is placed on the roadside and will display a vehicle’s speed as it approaches. If a driver is exceeding the speed limit they will be asked the slow down.
If under the limit, a ‘Well Done — Thank You’ message is displayed.
Council’s Road Safety Officer Nick Gainsford said all speeds recorded by the device will be used for comprehensive data analysis to highlight where speed is a problem.
The educational awareness campaign was launched in response to RTA crash data which pinpoints accident locations where speed was a contributing factor.
Council also receives complaints from community members who are concerned by speeding drivers in Port Macquarie-Hastings, particularly on residential streets. Speed hotspots identified in the Hastings include Lighthouse Road, Hill Street, Lake Road, Pacific Drive and Ocean Drive.
