Battle of the big bands

Port Macquarie Hastings Municipal Band members proved themselves to be the champions in 2008 when they won the East Coast of Australia 3rd Grade Concert Band Championship.
It’s on again for them on Sunday, June 12 at Newcastle City Hall.
Their nearest rival will be University of Newcastle Concert Band.
At 12.20pm, led by Musical Director Glenn Moore, the Port Macquarie Band begins its performance with their required sacred item, J S Bach’s ‘Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring’, followed by their major work ‘First Suite in E Flat’ by Gustav Holst.
Tickets are available at the door from 9am for this spectacle of seven bands, ranging from A to D Grade, all vying for supremacy. After lunch, a ‘Festival of the Bands’ brings everyone together to compete for the title of ‘Most Entertaining Band’.
With an aim to gain the big E, our Band will play numbers like Aaron Copeland’s ‘Hoedown’, ‘Jersey Boys Medley’ from the stage show, Elmer Bernstein’s ‘The Magnificent Seven’ and ‘Caravan’ by Duke Ellington.
