Construction of the Port Macquarie Regional Skatepark started on Monday following the Council resolution to accept the construction tender from Convic Skatepark.
Council’s Manager of Recreation and Buildings, Liam Bulley, believes that the facility will be a fantastic addition to the area’s recreational spaces.
“This project started almost five years ago and throughout that time we’ve worked with the skatepark users and specifically a ‘Skate Committee’ to design the Skatepark so that it will get maximum use for a range of wheeled sports including skateboarding, inline skating, BMX riding and scootering.
“In order to get the new skatepark operational by December, we started the demolition of the existing park on Monday (August 1). While this means that local users won’t have a skate facility for a number of months, the end result will be welcomed,” said Mr Bulley.
It is hoped construction of the skate park will be finalised by the Christmas school holiday period.
The total cost of the skatepark project is almost $700,000 which includes demolition of the existing facility and construction of the new skatepark, as well as associated landscaping and park furniture. The Federal Government’s Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program has contributed $289,000 to the project.
