Have say on abilities playground

Wauchope residents are invited to two community events to provide input into the design of a new all-abilities playground in Bain Park.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council received a $100,000 Federal Government grant for the creation of a community space in Wauchope, designed specifically to be accessed by people of varied physical abilities. The funding will contribute to the design and construction of an all abilities playground in Bain Park and construction of a ramp and improved access at the Community Arts Centre adjacent to the park.
The grant, part of an $11 million commitment to accessibility initiatives by the Federal Government, will be matched by $115,000 from Council. The intent of the Accessible Communities initiative is to improve the accessibility of community life for people with a disability.
Council is providing two opportunities for Wauchope residents to be involved in the design of the playground. The first will be held on Saturday, September 17 between 12 noon and 1.30pm. A free family sausage sizzle and children’s activities, encouraging young people to think about what sort of play experiences are important to them, will be a feature of the day.
Council representatives will speak with residents about playground options and design concepts in an effort to best meet the needs of all children using the play space, Director of Community and Cultural Development Lesley Atkinson said.
“The community chats are an opportunity to discuss and collaborate on the most inclusive design. Some of the issues we will need to address are access, pathways, shade and seating,” Ms Atkinson explained.
Council will also have an information stand at the Wauchope Farmers’ Markets on Saturday, September 24 between 9am and 11am.
A paediatric occupational therapist has been engaged by Council to consult on the playground design. Council is also actively engaging the Hastings Access Sub-Committee, local schools and service providers in the disability sector to participate in the design framework.
The All Abilities Playground is scheduled for completion by June 2012.
