Don’t miss your chance to enjoy Nunsense (1985), a musical comedy with a book, music, and lyrics by Dan Goggin.
Originating as a line of greeting cards, Goggin expanded the concept into a cabaret that ran for 38 weeks and eventually into a full-length musical. The original Off-Broadway production opened on December 12, 1985, running for 3672 performances and became the second-longest-running Off-Broadway show in history. By the time it closed, it had become an international phenomenon translated into at least 26 languages with more than 8000 productions worldwide. The show has since been adapted for television, starring Rue McClanahan, and has spawned six sequels and three spin-offs.
Nunsense begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned most of the order of sisters and they die of Botulism. As they do not have enough money to bury all the sisters, the sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for the eighth grade production of “Grease.”
Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head.
Playing from Friday, November 11 until Sunday, December 4 at Port Macquarie Players Theatre Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 8pm and Sunday 2pm.
Bookings can be made by contacting The Glasshouse Box office on (02) 6581 8888 or purchased one hour prior to the show at The Players Theatre, Cnr Gordon and Lord Streets.
