Protest over school closure

When parents at Byabarra Public School were informed that their children would have to find another school to attend in 2012, there were tears, raised voices, anger, and disbelief resulting in their decision to not allow the Government to close the school without raising their voices in protest.
Philip von Schoenberg, Federation Representative, Byabarra Public School said parents are determined not to give up on a school that was opened in 1895.
The NSW Teachers Federation stands alongside them, he said.
“At the P&C meeting held on December 12 parents decided to turn the end of year excursion into a protest about the closure of their school,” he said.
Mr von Schoenberg said last Thursday they protested as they travelled by bus to and from Port Macquarie, as well as enjoying all the planned activities.
He said with the help of community members outraged that the Department of Education and Communities is describing their school as somehow “educationally unsound’, students and teaching staff prepared placards and signs indicating their opposition to the closure of a wonderful, historic, small community school.
