Reflect, respect being Aussie: MP

Australia Day was more than just a public holiday, it was a day to celebrate our nation’s history as well as a time to look forward to the future, our local MP said.
Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams said Australians had much to celebrate and to be proud of on our national day.
“Our land, people, diversity and our cultures, our freedom and democracy and our belief in a fair go, are all distinctive features that have built our nation’s character over generations,” Mrs Williams said.
“We should reflect on the privileges and benefits we have as Australians, where people from many different backgrounds are able to live in peace and share in everything our country has to offer.”
This Australia Day, Mrs Williams asked residents to get into the spirit of the day, think about what it was we celebrate, what was it about being Australian that we valued most.
Last Thursday Mrs Williams attended two Australia Day events in Laurieton, as well as events in Harrington and Port Macquarie.
No matter where you were, Mrs Williams said, whether it was at a barbecue, celebrating with friends or at one of the many community events, there was something you can do to show your pride on our national day, Mrs Williams said.
