The Hastings Pipe Band pulled off a great performance at the 108th Maclean Highland Gathering this Easter gaining an overall 6th place out of 15 competing Pipe Bands, half of which had travelled interstate to compete in the East Coast Pipe Band Championships held here each year.
The highlight of the day was in being awarded third place in the Musical Selection Medley, an unbelievable achievement for a first time entry in such a large and experienced field, a spokesperson said.
The band was also given the honour of being duty band of the day and playing for the Drum Majors dress and marching contest.
The previous day members of the band had performed well in individual solo piping and drumming events with Heather Mackenzie a 1st and 3rd, Connar Mackenzie 2nd in their piping elements while Stewart Heddles and Cass Kinchin both achieved a 3rd in drumming.
Improving the player’s musical ability is an ongoing priority with weekend workshops currently being negotiated and with the inclusion of four new young players to swell the bands ranks, further advancement on the competition circuit looks certain, the spokesperson said.
