Police have charged a female driver in relation to the tragic hit-run death of a pedestrian in Port Macquarie last week.
About 6.20pm on Wednesday, June 20, a 48-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle on Hill Street.
The alleged “green coloured” car involved did not stop after the collision and the woman was left with fatal injuries.
She died at the scene.
Residents who live in the street were mortified by the terrible incident.
Local Liz Boleyn said, “I’m a walker, so the scary thing is this could have been me.
“We really need better footpaths and some way to slow traffic down.
“Some drivers think they can drive on these roads as if they were a motorway.”
So too, Margot Nelson said, “I live at the other end of this street and see car after car travelling way too fast.
“Hill Street is used as a major thoroughfare between Pacific Drive and Lake Road, yet I doubt there has ever been any planning nor consideration for ways to improve vehicle or pedestrian safety,” she said.
“A lack of footpaths, or existing footpaths which are themselves a hazard, mean that people are forced onto the roads.”
An investigation was launched by Police officers from the Mid-North Coast Crash Investigation Unit and detectives to find the driver and car involved in the devastating event.
Following information uncovered during the investigation, police seized a green coloured 2000 model Mazda 323 from a business in Port Macquarie in recent days.
A short time later, police arrested a 53-year-old woman at a home on Hill Street. She has been charged in relation to the collision, with fail to stop and render assistance following a vehicle impact causing death.
The woman has been released on conditional bail and will appear at Port Macquarie Local Court on July 16.
