After dragging themselves back from last week’s performance, Port Pirates ran away with the game against the Southern Cross University team – final score 72-0.
With soul-sapping rugby played from the ever reliable Pirates, it was certainly a long day for the Uni boys who deserve credit but were physically outplayed on the day.
What made it all so good was that the Pirates played, for the first time, with 14 players for the whole game and enduring fitness.
It was a brilliant effort from the backs, with the loose forwards always present, particularly the body height and the speed the backline taking the ball through the gaps and when the boys got stuck, the loose forwards took the ball and scored the points.
Not forgotten are the well executed runs Brad Cunningham had, as well as new-comer Frazer Yule. The back line could come up faster to blanket the attack from the opposition. The second half was flawless, with fast cover defence. The Port Pirates need one win to make it their best season yet.
The game against Kempsey is the vital one. It is more a mental thing – they must be accurate, want to be successful and will need a huge display of effort.
