Waste taxes

So Leslie Williams is staggered that “our Council will be whacked for collecting and disposing of household rubbish” due to the Federal Carbon Tax (Independent June 28).
Can she explain her feelings then for the $42.40 per tonne Waste Levy that Port Macquarie-Hastings Council collects for HER government which is a straight out tax and which will increase by $10/tonne (plus CPI) per annum until it reaches about $80/tonne. And before she blames the previous Labor government, which did introduce it, her Coalition government undertook a review of the tax in April this year.
Most local Councils made submissions arguing for the tax to be dropped or at worst capped at the 2011/12 rate of $31.10/tonne. Result – rate increased to $42.40/tonne effective from July 1, 2012 as planned.
