Residents of public and community housing attended a workshop for social housing tenants on Thursday, June 21 organised by the Northern Links and Tenants Association of Port Macquarie.
The Tenants Association President, Cate Brand, said the event was very successful, with over 30 tenants from Port Macquarie in attendance, with a mix of aged residents and younger residents.
Guest speakers were from Housing NSW, Northern Links and Country Labor.
Amongst the topics discussed were How to Record and Report Nuisance and Annoyance, as well as Understanding Mental Health, Tenants’ Rights and Responsibilities and Older Persons’ Programs and Support in the local area.
Representing Housing NSW, Mike Summerill, spoke on how to deal with problem neighbours who were causing nuisance and annoyance.
Michelle Stubbs, Manager of Partnership and Programs Mid-North Coast, spoke regarding Tenant Participation and encouraged tenants who were having problems with neighbours to have personal dialogue and proceed to mediation if necessary.
All residents were encouraged to look out for each other by communicating with neighbours every day.
Colleen Carmody, represent-ing Country Labor, joined the discussion on Understanding Mental Health, as the Port Macquarie Branch of Country Labor will be discussing this subject at the forthcoming State Labor Conference.
Delegates to the workshop were high in their praise for the recently completed Department of Housing units situated in Gordon, Church and Grant Streets.
It was stated that these units were the best appointed and designed in NSW.
Mrs Brand encouraged all residents of public housing to become involved in the Tenants Association, as it is an organisation that can assist individuals who may be having difficulties.
