A local doctor has been involved in the delivery of crucial medical equipment  to a community hospital in Nepal.
For the past three years, Dr Ray Hodgson, founder and director of the humanitarian organisation, Australians for Women’s Health (A4WH), has been providing surgical teaching sessions to hospitals within Nepal.
The diagnostic medical instruments, known as Computerised Urodynamics, are valued at approximately $50,000 AUS.
A generous donation from the Australian distributor of the medical company, Laborie, has allowed A4WH to provide this equipment to the Dhulikhe Hospital where these instruments will be based.
Medical volunteers from A4WH have also provided comprehensive training to the Dhulikhel Hospital staff.
The prevalence of urinary incontinence and genital prolapse among women in Nepal is extremely high.
Doctors within these hospitals can now perform advanced surgical techniques to correct these problems.
Dr Hodgson and his teams also provide regular surgical camps in remote regions within Nepal where no local doctors are available to perform the life-changing surgery.
“We have some extremely dedicated volunteers within A4WH,” Dr Hodgson said.
“They give up their annual leave and their spare cash to help out with these terrible afflictions of incontinence and genital prolapse.
“These women and their doctors can now be confident that the most accurate diagnosis can now be made of their condition.
“This in turn will allow the best possible chance of correcting their problem and a return to normal life.
“In the meantime, in order to continue to provide surgical treatment in Nepal and other developing countries, A4WH are in huge need of financial support. Every single cent of every dollar donated to A4WH goes to the women in need of medical treatment. Unlike other charity organisations, no part of any donation is used for administration or other costs,” Dr Hodgson said.
