Foil for the fruit bats

In the mid 1950s I lived with my parents on their 300 acre farm/orchard on Old Northern Road Dural.
We were able to deter the flying foxes/fruit bats from attacking our citrus and stone fruit trees by tying strips of aluminium foil to the branches.
Then in 1984, whilst teaching at Elanora Heights Primary School, one of my fellow teachers complained that her grapefruit were always infected by fruit fly. I suggested she wrap aluminium foil around the trunk and hang a few strips from the branches. Result: perfect grapefruit.
