RUGBY League legend Laurie Daley was in town last week to launch an employment campaign targeting Indigenous people.
Speaking at the campaign launch at the Town Green Inn to a gathering of local employers, the league superstar called on business owners to employ 31 Indigenous people before the end of October, helping to close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous unemployment (24 percent and 7.6 percent).
Mr Daley also delighted the gathering with tales of his rugby league playing career with the Canberra Raiders and experiences training the NSW State of Origin team. Coincidentally, his contract to train the State of Origin team was extended for a further two years only hours after he visited Port Macquarie.
The campaign is being supported by the Arthur Beetson Foundation (Arthur was a famous Aboriginal footballer) and has also been launched in Kempsey.
Substantial incentives and support are available for employers who sign up to take on an indigenous employee, including cash bonuses, mentoring programs and the chance to win grand final tickets.
