The Hastings community will be cheering three local WorldSkills competitors in hairdressing, fashion design and beauty care at the national competition being held at Sydney Olympic Park from August 30 to September 1.
Gemma Edwards, of Lorne, sees the 2012 WorldSkills Australia National competition as a great opportunity to continue her dedicated exploration of her chosen field of Hairdressing.
Supported by her employers and mentors Peter and Michelle Boskovski of Milan’s Hairdressing, Gemma has been training extensively to raise her skills to the level she believes will win her gold at the 2012 Worldskills Australia National competition.
Dimity Sinclair is a former student of Port Macquarie TAFE Campus and a previous Worldskills competitor, having won a bronze medal at the 2010 Worldskills Australia National Competition.
This time, Dimity is determined to bring home the gold for her region and claim the title of the ‘Best in Australia’ in her chosen field of Fashion Technology.
Former TAFE student Abbie Bills is now employed by Brisbane employer, Pure Indulgence, who have been very supportive and flexible to accommodate the extra training required.
With the assistance of her former teacher and now mentor, Julie Hyde, from Port Macquarie TAFE Campus, Abbie is working hard to perfect every technique during her training in the lead-up to the 2012 Worldskills Australia National competition.
At this year’s National Competition, approximately 500 competitors representing 50 skill areas from 30 regions Australia-wide will take part.
WorldSkills Australia is an independent, non-profit organisation that conducts trade and skill competitions to challenge young people to achieve work skill excellence.
The students have to raise funds to attend the National Competition and are very dependent upon the generosity of their employers and local businesses for both financial and in-kind support.
In return, the students are mentored to a higher degree by their local teachers and industry specialists, resulting in these skills being able to be utilised in their workplace.
After three days of competing, the competitors will have Sunday to rest while their work is being assessed prior to the announcements and medals ceremony on Sunday night, September 2.
