Residents tuck into feast of celebrations

National Meals on Wheels Day was celebrated in the Hastings and Camden Haven last week.
The national celebration recognises the enormous community contribution of more than 80,000 Meals on Wheels volunteers across Australia.
President of the Camden Haven Meals On Wheels Management Committee Kym Stanley said the annual economic value of Meals On Wheels services nationally was more than $350 million.
“Meals On Wheels services receive some government funding but could not operate without our volunteers who help keep costs down and make meals more affordable for clients,” Mrs Stanley said.
Port Macquarie, Wauchope and Camden Haven Meals On Wheels services are funded to deliver 59,000 meals annually, relying on 530 volunteers to transport the meals to the doors of more than 280 clients.
Volunteer management committees also play a crucial role in managing each of the three services. Collectively the volunteers contribute a staggering 7200 hours every year, conservatively adding $180,000 worth of “free” time to the local services.
Lyne MP Rob Oakeshott helped celebrate by delivering meals in Laurieton last week.
Mr Oakeshott said it was an honour to help deliver meals on this national day, and acknowledged the outstanding contribution of all MOW volunteers to such a vital community service.
“Meals On Wheels services enable the frail aged and people with a disability to remain independent in their own homes for longer. Without this service many people would be at risk of premature admission to care facilities,” he said.
“Meals On Wheels provides nutritionally balanced, affordable meals, as well as other food services such as social eating programs and food shopping.
“Volunteers may be a client’s only daily point of contact, so their meal delivery reduces the chances of social isolation for some clients and assists in monitoring their health and wellbeing.
“Meals On Wheels is truly living up to its motto of ‘More than just a meal’ and I congratulate all those who are involved for supporting such a valuable service”, Mr Oakeshott said.
