Bosses gain insight into military life

Recently, Kellon Beard, Regional Manager of the NSW Business Chamber spent five days visiting Defence Bases in Darwin as part of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Exercise Boss Lift program.
Exercise Boss Lift is a Defence program organised and run by the, Reserve and Employer Support Division (CRESD). It is designed to inform and promote to employers and the broader community the training, skills and capabilities that Defence Reservists bring to the civilian workplace.
During his visit, Mr Beard met a number of other prominent business people from around Australia and with high ranking Defence staff including Lt-Col Paul O’Donnell, CO Norforce. As one of the Army’s three operational regional force surveillance units, Norforce plays a vital role patrolling the harsh outback and participating in Operation Resolute, protecting Australia’s borders and offshore maritime assets. While with the Army Mr Beard also had a close look at the Tiger Armed Reconnaissance Helicopters, used by the Army.
Mr Beard also visited HMAS Coonawarra the Darwin Navy base and met with Melanie Verho a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Australian Navy. Lieutenant Commander Verho is the Commanding Officer of the Armidale Class Patrol Boat crew ATTACK FIVE.
The RAAF Base was visited during the week and Mr Beard got up close to the RAAF FA 18 Hornets and the Hercules during exercise Pitch Black. Exercise Pitch Black is a biennial military exercise hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force and includes international air forces with defence ties to Australia.
Mr Beard was given an insight into service life, including kit and equipment demonstrations, a range shoot, and the opportunity to mix with a number of military personnel including reservists.
As the Regional Manager of the NSW Business Chambers, Mr Beard discovered what makes a good Defence Reservist and he said it was an opportunity that he would recommend to anyone.
“To be able to see first hand the great job the Defence Reserves do was a chance of a lifetime and these young men and women are a credit to their country,” Mr Beard said.
“They are organised, disciplined and display tremendous team work capabilities, all traits that when brought back to their civilian roles will be of benefit to their employers.”
Mr Beard can see the benefits of employing Defence Reservists and although it is a commitment from both the employer in allowing the time away from the workplace, and the employee in being away from family and friends, he believes the outcomes are proven.
“I believe the experiences and values that they get from the reserves will undoubtedly make them better members of their communities,” he said.
Mr Beard returned home with a greater understanding of the role of Defence Reservists.
Exercise Boss Lift is conducted regularly as part of the Employer Engagement Program coordinated by Defence Reserves Support. For more information contact defencereservessupport.gov.au
