Students celebrate, connect and grow

TAFE Counsellors Andrew Hart and Madeline Sanders join students to have fun and relax.

Students at the Port Macquarie TAFE Campus celebrated Mental Health Month with activities organised by the campuses’ counsellors and Student Association, around this year’s theme of Celebrate, Connect and Grow.
Participants enjoyed a free lunch with live music, drumming, dancing and making juggling balls last Wednesday, with over 80 students getting involved to ‘de-stress’. Some even joined students from the Wauchope and Port Macquarie Performing Arts in dancing ‘Gangnam’ style.
Andrew Hart, TAFE Counsellor said, “Our students tell us that they have a lot to celebrate, so we wanted to hold an event that is fun and really focuses on the things in life we can celebrate.  As a TAFE counsellor I have had the opportunity to see many of our students form enriching connections through group study. The positive effect this has on mental health can be seen through their growing confidence and developed skill outcomes.”
Madeline Sanders has worked as a counsellor at the Port Macquarie Campus for over nine years. “When I first started in this position, there were some young people and adults who were unable to complete their schooling. They started in our Skills for Work and Training and then progressed into work related courses and I now see them happy and working around Port Macquarie — it is so encouraging,” Madeline said.
Students that experience difficulties or need additional support can access plenty of assistance. North Coast TAFE offers counselling services that are free and confidential. Disability support, Student Mentors and access to an Aboriginal Liaison Officer is also available for currently enrolled students. In addition to support in class, students are able to receive extra learning support from specialist maths, literacy and study teachers.
