Last Wednesday marked the five-year anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations.
On this day five years ago, then Prime Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd, honoured the Indigenous peoples of this land with an apology to help heal the wrongs of the past and move forward with confidence to the future.
Council’s Director of Community and Cultural Development Lesley Atkinson said, “The day was an historic moment for the nation and that has allowed Aboriginal communities across Australia to begin their healing journey.
“It reminds us all to pause and reflect on an important milestone for the nation, our commitment and path towards a united and reconciled country, in support and recognition of the National Apology in 2008.
“Port Macquarie Has-tings Council made a declaration and commitment to recognising, celebrating and maintaining a sense of place for the traditional owners of our region, the Birpai people.”
The Council continues to participate in and support the commemoration of Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week, NAIDOC Week and other cultural activities in conjunction with the local Aboriginal community.
To commemorate the National Apology anniversary, a bush tucker gathering was held for the Mayor, Councillors and staff to acknowledge and pay their respects in the spirit of reconciliation.
