The McDonalds-Port City Bowling Club’s 1st Grade Leagues Magpies played a rain-reduced one-day game against Macquarie at Oxley Oval last Saturday. Batting first, the opposition reached 5/136 from their designated 27 overs but in response, the home team were bundled out for 96 with only Phil McVicar (22) and Scott Dickson (19*) showing any resistance with the bat.
The 2nd Grade match between the same two clubs was washed out on the turf wicket at Wayne Richards, while the 3rd Grade Magpies defeated Macquarie by 4 wickets at Wood Street.
Darren Hall (3/4), James Ketteringham (2/29) and Ryan Doherty (2/29) grabbed the wickets to have their opponents dismissed for 118. Josh Felton then smacked 34 not out and, along with Wayne Popplewell (27) and Brett Wasson (20), reeled in the total with plenty of overs to spare.
The 4th Grade Port City side lost to Camden Haven by 18 runs despite an impressive 69 not out by Tony Glen, from a total of 158.
Rob Mooney (4/25) and Adam Power (3/15) were the pick of the bowlers.
In Sunday’s annual Beechwood 7s Tournament, Magpies went down to
eventual winners Wauchope who defeated the BDM All-Stars in the final.
Meanwhile over the previous weekend, the 1st Grade Leagues Magpies showed great spirit in their two-day clash against Camden Haven at Wayne Richards.
With the first day washed out, the respective captains agreed to a sporting declaration, with both their first innings ending at 0/0 after just one delivery.
Port City then unleashed in their second dig, reaching 6/228 and declaring after 35 overs, courtesy of Chris Cole with 64, Kyle Bray (47) and Phil McVicar (42).
In response, the Redbacks could only manage 5/167. Ash Anderson was the pick of the bowlers with 2/25.
The 2nd Grade Designer Living Kitchens side recorded a solid 4 wicket 1st innings win over Camden Haven at Stuart Park in another two-day game reduced to one day.
The Havens were dis-missed for 153, with Peter Kew (4/30) the standout bowler, while Nik James (2/16), Tony Glavurdic (2/34) and Sean Staniforth (2/38) also made a contribution with the ball.
The Leagues ‘Pies notched up the victory with two overs to spare, with Jamie Hall leading the way with 54 runs, along with Brendan Cunningham (26*) and Staniforth (25).
The 3rd Grade MCFM team was no match for the Pirates Mutineers, going down by
121 runs.
The opposition racked up a total of 203, with Jeff Kelsey (3/31), Ryan Doherty (3/43) and Dylan Lewis (2/32) taking wickets. Port City was then dismissed for 82 with Greg Hall top scoring with 16.
The 4th Grade Better Homes side also lost to their Port Pirates counterparts going down by four wickets.
Leagues were all out for 123, with Kade Fens (38) leading the way with the bat but, despite the best efforts of bowlers Ian Dickson (2/17), Tony Glen (2/24) and Mick Gordon (2/28) the Sea Dogs managed to reach the total with 12 overs to spare.
The Port City Leagues Magpies will be involved in fundraising this weekend as part of the annual nation-wide “Pink Stumps Day” with a number of players donning bright pink gear during their matches.
