Port Macquarie firefighters will join fire and rescue officers from more than 20 fire stations across NSW to compete in the Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Firefighter Regional Championships at Tumut on Saturday and Sunday, March 23-24.
So far, teams from 10 southern NSW brigades and another nine out-of-area brigades, as well as a NSW Rural Fire Service team from Kootingal, are preparing to battle it out for line honours in the first round of the 2013 FRNSW Firefighter Championship series.
The championships will see teams of fire and rescue officers competing in challenges that test their skills in setting up and deploying firefighting equipment quickly and safely in a competitive environment.
Commissioner Greg Mullins, who will officially open the championships, said Tumut firefighters should be congratulated for the time and effort they had put into preparations for the event.
“They have worked for many months to prepare for this weekend, which will see scores of firefighters and their family members from across the state descend on Tumut. It is a real boost for the local community,” Commissioner Mullins said.
“We are especially pleased to hold the first of our regional firefighter championships for 2013 at Tumut after last year’s event was cancelled due to the severe floods in the region.
“Fire and rescue officers across the state’s south have been busy in recent times assisting their own, and neighbouring, communities during major flood and fire emergencies.
“I am sure their home towns will return the favour by supporting their local firefighters when they come to pit their skills, critical during these types of emergencies, against each other.”
