Rewarding local volunteers

APPLICATIONS are now open for Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s fourth annual Volunteer of the Year Award.
The aim of the award is to recognise and celebrate local volunteers whose work contributes to the social and cultural well-being of the community.
Mayor Peter Besseling said the awards first began in 2010 as a way of recognising the many hundreds of volunteers whose significant contributions made for a better Port Macquarie-Hastings community.
“Often people give up their time and spend many hours helping others without any recognition. These awards are designed to show volunteers how appreciated they are by our community,” Cr Besseling said.
“Last year we received 20 nominations from people across the region who volunteer for a diverse range of community organisations. Now that the award is in its fourth year, we are hoping through greater community awareness, there will be an increase in nominations received this year.
“The recipient will receive a certificate and the opportunity to nominate a not-for-profit organisation to receive a $1000 donation.”
Online applications are now open. Visit council’s website to submit your applications at www.pmhc.nsw.gov.au/volunteer.
Applications close on May 3.
The winner will be announced at an award presentation at Douglas Vale Winery on Friday, May 17.
