WANT to join the fastest growing women’s sport in the world?
The Port Macquarie Roller Derby League is holding its latest Fresh Meat intake on 13 May.
The league began as a dream conjured up by Lex Talionis (Alexia Giblin), after she moved to Port Macquarie from Darwin, where she had been training previously with the Darwin Roller Girls.
She put out her feelers, looking for roller skating enthusiasts, and late in 2011 there were enough enthusiastic individuals that would help her achieve her goal.
In February 2012, PMRDL became a registered not-for-profit sporting organisation and has been thriving ever since.
Roller derby is a sport that gets you fit and toned without you noticing it. Two hour training sessions feel like half an hour and you walk away with stronger core muscles, stronger thighs, toned legs and most importantly a giant grin.
Derby girls need to be strong, we want you to be able to take, and give, hits without falling over!
Fresh Meat is the term used to describe the newbies, those that haven’t skated in years, those that have never put on their skates, or those that are good at what they do but still have to pass the test.
Everyone starts out as a freshie. It’s a 10-week course that teaches you the basic skills needed for roller derby, by the end you will be able to stop confidently and correctly, skate great and jump a three-inch high piece of foam.
Guys, don’t fear, if you’re into this kind of thing and want to get involved, please do!
Roller derby is a fast paced sport and we always need more referees and NSO’s (non-skating officials,) so strap on your skates and join in!
Mannie from Skaters Pitstop can get you organised and supply the fresh meat pack, which includes skates, protective gear (knee, elbow and wrist pads,) helmet, and a mouthguard! He is located on Murray St, and will be happy to help you out.
Roller Derby is life-changing. You become part of a family that is there for you, whether it be on or off skates. You get fit, you make friends, you grow as a person, and you look good while doing it! It doesn’t matter what age, what background, what career path you have taken, roller derby is a sport for everyone, with no judgements passed.
On 30 April PMRDL will be holding a Fresh Meat info night at Tacking Point Tavern for those that are unsure about what Roller Derby involves. So come along and meet some derby girls (and guys!) and see what it’s all about.
