CAPTION: John Smith is the demonstrator for the newly formed Hastings Bonsai Group. He has more than 30 years of experience in bonsai.
A NEW bonsai group has been formed in Port Macquarie.
The Hastings Bonsai Group is inviting people who are interested in this fascinating hobby to attend its first meeting on Saturday from 10am to 3pm.
The meeting will be held at Rotary Hall on Hasting River Drive.
The word bonsai is Japanese and means ‘a tree in a pot’. Most people think that bonsai began in Japan, but it actually started in China, where it was called penjing.
It then spread to Japan, where the Japanese refined it to the artform as we know it today.
The Hastings Bonsai Group has a number of experienced members who are willing to teach the art of bonsai.
On Saturday, new members will receive lessons so they can start their journey in bonsai. This will be a hands-on experience, where the group will have a number of trees available for new members to try out their bonsai skills.
There will also be a small display of bonsai trees, while trees, pots and tools will be available for sale to new members get started.
