DO YOU own a telescope and don‘t know what to do with it, or have you always had a fascination for the night sky?
A new astronomy group is forming in the Hastings by renowned astronomer Dave Reneke.
Mr Reneke is a feature writer for Australian publications, including Australasian Science magazine, and is a science correspondent for the ABC and commercial radio.
“Over the years many Hastings residents have approached me about starting an astronomy group and I think it’s a good idea,” he said.
“It’s strictly for Mid North Coast residents and free for anyone who wants to join.”
Mr Reneke said he was often asked questions about space and astronomy, many relating to buying and using a telescope.
“A big part of the group will be just that,” he said.
“I’ll be able to teach members not only how to select the right scope for them, but show them how to get the best use from it.”
A formation meeting has been set down at Mr Reneke’s house at 20 Mahogany Way in Wauchope on Saturday 22 June at 5.30pm.
“Membership to the group is free and informal, with no committees or official procedures to slow things down,” he said.
Mr Reneke said the group would hold regular astronomy sessions in the Hastings for the general public and conduct daytime solar viewing in and around Port Macquarie, Wauchope and the Camden Haven.
“You don‘t need a telescope to join, the group will loan you one,” Mr Reneke said.
“It’s a sausage sizzle so just turn up on the night, bring some food or ring ahead if you would like to let us know you’re coming.”
