Fielding one of the smallest teams at the Australian National Masters Championships, Port Macquarie Rowing Club came away with two national titles, a share in four other national titles and the second highest medal count in the Central Districts.
The event was held at the International Regatta Course on Lake Burley Griffin at Canberra and Port Macquarie’s star veteran rower, 73-year-old Carry Williamson, defended her National Singles Title and also won a further gold in the women’s double scull, rowing with Margaret Vercoe.
Williamson then fronted up in the Masters H Quad to obtain another gold, rowing in a composite team with rowers from Sydney clubs.
Port Macquarie’s Kim Chilton also shined at the championships, winning gold in the Masters D Single scull event, the D Double scull event and the the Women’s C Quad event.
Elizabeth Levido and James Young also took out gold in the Mixed E Double scull event.
The oars and boats were barely dry from the nationals when they were once again loaded and transported to the State Masters Championships, which were held at the International Rowing Regatta Centre at Penrith.
Fresh from the Nationals, Williamson again came to the fore, taking out gold in the Womens H single scull event, then rowing with Jeannette Beeton to win gold in the Women’s H Double event.
Chilton, rowing with composite team-mates, won gold in the Women’s D double race, the Women’s D quad and the Women’s C quad.
With medal tallies climbing for the Port Macquarie team, Chilton, Deb Gardner, Brian Glawson and Adam Causley rowed in the Mixed C quad race to take out gold.
