ROAD conditions in Port Macquarie need to be improved, according to Nationals Senate Leader Barnaby Joyce.
Senator Joyce called for the roads shake-up when he joined Nationals candidate for Lyne, David Gillespie, in Port last week.
“The problem of local roads is one that I come across as Shadow Minister for Local Government time and time again, and it’s easy to say federal money is part of the solution,” Senator Joyce said.
“Unfortunately recent High Court cases have thrown into doubt the validity of direct payments from the Commonwealth to local government for funding programs like Roads to Recovery. This is why we support the constitutional recognition of local government.”
Mr Gillespie agreed that road conditions on the mid north coast were poor in several areas and said local government would need support to improve the issue.
“Barnaby and I realise that these roads are the links between businesses, communities and families and that is exactly the message we are taking back to the Federal Coalition,” Mr Gillespie said.
