PORT Macquarie cyclist Lauren Kitchen has been named to ride for Australia at the upcoming UCI World Road Cycling Championships.
Kitchen was rewarded for her hard work and good form for Wiggle Honda, and will ride with the likes of Shara Gillow and Tiffany Cromwell in Italy.
The tour starts on Sunday night (AEST) in Florence and finishes the following Sunday.
Kitchen, who was born in Armidale before moving to Port Macquarie, recently finished third at the Prologue Tour de Ardeche in France and previously finished fifth in tour events in Sweden and the Netherlands.
“Australia always go into the Worlds with the expectation that our athletes will challenge for podium positions,” Cycling Australia high performance director Kevin Tabotta said.
“Despite recent high profile omissions through injury, this group is capable of delivering across the categories.
“The road race course is one of the toughest we’ve seen for a while with some technical descending whereas the time trial course is flat and very fast so we’ve selected riders accordingly.”
